Koralliriutoissa, or coral reefs, are complex and diverse underwater ecosystems found primarily in warm, shallow ocean waters. These ecosystems are characterized by the growth of coral, which are marine invertebrates belonging to the class Anthozoa. Corals form symbiotic relationships with photosynthetic algae called zooxanthellae, which provide them with nutrients and contribute to the vibrant colors seen in many reefs.

Coral reefs are often referred to as the "rainforests of the sea" due to their high biodiversity. They support a vast array of marine life, including fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and various invertebrates. These ecosystems also serve as natural barriers, protecting coastlines from erosion and storm surges while providing food and economic resources for coastal communities.

Unfortunately, coral reefs face significant threats from human activities. Climate change, ocean acidification, pollution, and overfishing are among the primary stressors leading to coral bleaching and degradation. Bleaching occurs when corals expel their zooxanthellae due to stress, turning white and losing their primary food source. Without intervention, bleached corals may die, leading to the collapse of entire reef systems.

Conservation efforts aim to mitigate these threats through sustainable fishing practices, marine protected areas, and global climate action. Restoration projects, such as coral nurseries and artificial reefs, are also being implemented to help rebuild damaged ecosystems. Protecting coral reefs is crucial not only for marine biodiversity but also for the millions of people who depend on them for livelihoods and coastal protection.
