Koori

Koori is an umbrella term used to describe Indigenous Australians from New South Wales and Victoria. It is applied as a cultural and political identifier that encompasses numerous language groups and nations along the southeastern coast of Australia. The term is widely used in education, media, and community organizations, though its exact meaning can vary between communities.

Koori languages are a group of Indigenous languages associated with Koori communities. They are part of the broader Pama–Nyungan language family and were historically spoken across the region. Today many Koori languages are endangered or revived through language programs. Examples of language varieties often linked to Koori communities include Dhudhuroa, Gunai/Kurnai, Woiwurrung, and Boonwurrung.

Koori peoples have diverse cultural practices, including traditional art, storytelling, music, and ceremonial life tied to land and country. In contemporary Australia, Koori people participate in politics, education, sports, and media, and have been at the forefront of land rights and cultural preservation efforts. Community organizations, schools, and cultural centers frequently use the term to identify heritage and shared experiences, while recognizing regional distinctions.

The origin and scope of the term are not precisely defined. While widely used, the label can be contested or embraced differently by individuals and communities; some prefer language- or nation-specific identifiers.
