Koordinointiteoria, or coordination theory, is a field of study that examines how independent actors, such as individuals, organizations, or even nations, can align their actions to achieve common goals or avoid undesirable outcomes. It delves into the mechanisms and strategies that facilitate coordinated behavior in situations where decentralized decision-making might otherwise lead to suboptimal results or outright failure.

Central to coordination theory are concepts like shared knowledge, expectations, and communication. For coordination to occur, participants must have a reasonable understanding of each other's intentions, capabilities, and preferences. This shared understanding can be built through various means, including explicit agreements, established conventions, or even informal social norms. The theory often explores how to overcome challenges like the "assurance problem," where individuals are reluctant to commit to a coordinated action unless they are confident that others will also participate.

Different types of coordination problems exist, such as pure coordination games where any mutually agreed-upon strategy leads to a good outcome, and mixed motive games where coordination is beneficial but individual incentives might pull actors in different directions. Applications of coordination theory are found in diverse fields, including economics (e.g., market equilibria, industrial organization), political science (e.g., international relations, coalition formation), sociology (e.g., social movements, collective action), and computer science (e.g., distributed systems, multi-agent systems). Understanding coordination theory helps in designing institutions, policies, and technological solutions that promote effective cooperation and collective action.
