Kooperatiiviliikumine

Kooperatiiviliikumine refers to the cooperative movement, a social and economic movement that advocates for and practices the principles of cooperation. The origins of the modern cooperative movement can be traced back to the early 19th century in Rochdale, England, with the establishment of the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society in 1844. These pioneers developed a set of principles that have since become the foundation for cooperatives worldwide. The movement spread rapidly, encompassing various sectors such as consumer cooperatives, worker cooperatives, agricultural cooperatives, housing cooperatives, and credit unions.

Cooperative principles aim to ensure that cooperatives are run for the benefit of their members, promoting fairness, equality, and shared prosperity. They are distinct from traditional businesses in their governance structure and their primary objective, which is often to meet the needs of members rather than to maximize profit for external shareholders.
