Kontrollkaardide, often translated as control cards or check cards, are a concept used in various professional fields, particularly in quality control and management systems. Their primary purpose is to monitor and ensure the consistency and stability of a process or a set of data over time. By regularly recording specific measurements or observations, a control card allows for the identification of deviations from expected performance.

The fundamental principle behind kontrollkaardide is the distinction between common cause variation and special cause variation. Common cause variation represents the inherent variability within a process that is expected and unavoidable. Special cause variation, on the other hand, indicates that an unusual event or factor has influenced the process, leading to a significant deviation. Kontrollkaardide are designed to help distinguish between these two types of variation.

Typically, a kontrollkaart displays a central line representing the average value, along with upper and lower control limits. These limits are usually set at three standard deviations from the average. Data points plotted on the card that fall within these limits are considered to be within normal variation. However, points that fall outside the limits, or exhibit a non-random pattern within the limits, suggest the presence of special cause variation, prompting an investigation into the process to identify and rectify the issue.
