Kontrolliyksiköiden, often translated as "control units" in English, refers to the fundamental components responsible for managing and coordinating the operations of a computer or other digital device. These units are central to the functioning of the Central Processing Unit (CPU) and dictate the sequence of instructions executed by the processor.

The primary role of a control unit is to fetch instructions from memory, decode them to understand what action needs to be performed, and then direct the necessary hardware components, such as the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) and memory, to carry out that action. It acts as a traffic controller for the data flow within the processor, ensuring that operations happen in the correct order and at the right time.

Control units can be implemented in various ways, including hardwired logic circuits or microprogrammed sequences. Hardwired control units are faster but less flexible, while microprogrammed units offer greater adaptability and easier modification of instruction sets.

The functionality of a control unit is crucial for the overall performance and reliability of a computing system.
