Kontrollimerkkejä, often translated as control characters, are specific characters within a character set that do not represent a visible symbol but rather perform an action or provide control information. They were originally conceived for use in telecommunication and teletype systems to control the transmission and reception of data, as well as to manage the operation of mechanical devices.

These characters are typically found in the lower range of ASCII and Unicode character sets. Examples include characters like carriage return (CR), line feed (LF), backspace (BS), tab (TAB), and escape (ESC). Carriage return, for instance, signals the end of a line and instructs a printing device to move its print head to the beginning of the current line. Line feed, on the other hand, moves the print head down to the next line. Together, CR and LF often form the newline sequence used to mark the end of a line in text files.

Control characters can also be used for more complex operations. The escape character, for example, is used to signal that the following character sequence should be interpreted differently, often as a command or an escape code. This is commonly seen in terminal emulators and programming languages for formatting text or issuing commands.

In modern computing, while many control characters still serve their original purposes, their usage has evolved. Some are integral to text file formats and communication protocols, while others have been superseded by more sophisticated control mechanisms. Understanding control characters is important for comprehending low-level data handling and the historical development of computing and telecommunications.
