Kontrasztarányokat, often translated as contrast ratios, are a fundamental characteristic used to describe the performance of display devices, particularly monitors and televisions. Essentially, a contrast ratio quantifies the difference between the brightest white a display can produce and the darkest black it can achieve simultaneously. It is typically expressed as a ratio, for example, 1000:1, where the first number represents the brightest white output relative to the darkest black.

A higher contrast ratio generally indicates a more dynamic and visually impressive image. Displays with higher contrast ratios can render deeper blacks and brighter whites, leading to more detail in both shadow and highlight areas of an image. This results in a more realistic and immersive viewing experience. Conversely, a low contrast ratio means the display struggles to produce a significant difference between light and dark, potentially leading to washed-out colors and a loss of detail.

The method of measuring contrast ratios can vary between manufacturers and technologies, which can sometimes lead to confusion. Static contrast ratio is measured under consistent lighting conditions, while dynamic contrast ratio can be adjusted by the display's internal processing, often by dimming the backlight for dark scenes. Therefore, when evaluating display performance, it is useful to consider both the stated contrast ratio and the technology used to achieve it.
