Kontrastmedlet, also known as contrast medium or contrast agent, is a substance used to enhance the visibility of internal body structures during medical imaging procedures. These substances are administered to the patient and interact with different tissues in ways that alter their appearance on scans such as X-rays, CT scans, MRI, and ultrasound. This difference in interaction allows radiologists and other medical professionals to better differentiate between normal and abnormal tissues, identify pathologies like tumors or blockages, and assess blood flow.

There are various types of contrast agents, each suited for specific imaging modalities and applications. Iodine-based contrast agents are commonly used in X-ray and CT scans. They are often administered intravenously and work by absorbing X-rays more effectively than surrounding tissues. Gadolinium-based contrast agents are primarily used in MRI scans. These agents alter the magnetic properties of water molecules in tissues, leading to signal changes that are detected by the MRI scanner. Barium sulfate, another contrast agent, is typically ingested or administered rectally for imaging the gastrointestinal tract. Ultrasound contrast agents, often microbubbles, are injected into the bloodstream to improve the visualization of blood flow and soft tissues.

The administration of contrast agents is generally safe, but potential side effects can occur. These can range from mild reactions like nausea or a warm sensation to more severe allergic reactions. The specific risks and benefits are always carefully considered by the medical team before administering a contrast agent, and patients are typically monitored for any adverse reactions. Proper hydration is often recommended after administration to help the body excrete the agent.
