KontextID

KontextID is a concept in digital identity management that describes a framework for issuing and using context-specific identifiers. The central idea is that individuals interact with different services in distinct contexts (such as work, healthcare, social platforms, or physical locations), and only the minimum necessary attributes should be disclosed for a given context. KontextID aims to separate these context-specific identities so that a single user does not reveal the same full profile across all interactions.

In principle, KontextID relies on cryptographic technologies and digital identity building blocks such as decentralized identifiers (DIDs) and verifiable credentials (VCs). Users would hold identity material in secure wallets and present cryptographic proofs that authorize access or verify attributes without exposing unrelated data. Contextual scoping mechanisms determine which attributes are reusable in a given scenario, and consent management tools govern disclosure and revocation. Interoperability and governance are important considerations to ensure that different systems can recognize and respect the context boundaries established by a KontextID framework.

Potential applications include cross-service authentication, privacy-preserving access control, and streamlined regulatory compliance (for example, selective KYC or role-based access in enterprises). Advantages cited for KontextID include reduced data leakage, greater user control over disclosures, and simplified data minimization. Challenges involve achieving standardization, managing governance and revocation across contexts, addressing interoperability among providers, and maintaining a user-friendly experience in complex identity environments.
