Kontaktijäähdytysmenetelmät, known in English as contact cooling methods, refer to techniques where a colder object is brought into direct physical contact with a hotter object to transfer heat. This direct physical interaction facilitates the flow of thermal energy from the hotter body to the colder one, effectively reducing the temperature of the hotter object.

The primary principle behind contact cooling is heat conduction. When two materials with different temperatures are in contact, the atoms or molecules with higher kinetic energy in the hotter material collide with those of lower kinetic energy in the colder material, transferring energy. The rate of heat transfer depends on factors such as the temperature difference, the thermal conductivity of the materials involved, and the contact surface area.

Common applications of contact cooling include heat sinks used in electronic devices. These heat sinks, typically made of materials with high thermal conductivity like aluminum or copper, are attached directly to heat-generating components such as CPUs or GPUs. The heat sink absorbs heat from the component and dissipates it into the surrounding air, often with the aid of fins to increase surface area. Another example is the use of cold plates in liquid cooling systems, where a fluid circulates through channels in direct contact with a heat source, absorbing its heat and carrying it away for dissipation. Refrigeration systems also employ contact cooling principles, where evaporator coils come into direct contact with the items to be cooled, absorbing their heat. The efficiency of these methods is heavily reliant on achieving good thermal contact, minimizing air gaps or insulating layers between the surfaces.
