Konstantkoeffisiente refers to coefficients in a mathematical expression or model that do not vary with the variables being considered. In many equations, some coefficients depend on the independent variable (for example time) or on an index, while others remain fixed constants. When a model uses coefficients that do not change, these are called constant coefficients.

In differential equations, constant coefficients are common in linear equations where the terms multiplying the unknown function or its derivatives are fixed numbers. For example, in a homogeneous linear differential equation like y'' + 3y' + 2y = 0, the coefficients 1, 3, and 2 are constants. Such equations are often solved by forming and solving a characteristic equation, which yields solutions that are combinations of exponentials. This is in contrast to differential equations with variable coefficients, where the multiplying factors depend on the independent variable.

The methods for solving these relations, such as characteristic roots, resemble those used for constant-coefficient differential equations.

In linear algebra and related areas, constant coefficients may describe coefficients in linear combinations or entries of matrices that are not functions of the variables in the problem. They contrast with coefficients that are themselves functions of a variable or parameter.

Etymology and usage vary by language; the concept is typically expressed in English as “constant coefficients,” while German uses “konstante Koeffizienten” and Dutch or other languages have analogous terms. The central idea is that certain coefficients remain fixed constants rather than varying with the system’s variables.
