Konfoundedmuuttujia, often translated as confounding variables, are extraneous factors that can influence both the independent and dependent variables in a study, leading to a misleading association between them. When a confounding variable is present, it can distort the true relationship between the variables of interest, making it appear as though the independent variable is causing a change in the dependent variable when in reality, the confounder is responsible for the observed effect.

Identifying and controlling for confounding variables is crucial for establishing causal relationships and ensuring the validity of research findings. Researchers attempt to mitigate the impact of confounders through various methods, including random assignment of participants to different study groups, statistical adjustments during data analysis, and careful study design. For example, in a study examining the effect of a new drug on blood pressure, age could be a confounding variable if the group receiving the drug is significantly older than the control group. If blood pressure decreases in the drug group, it might be due to the drug or simply the age difference.
