Kompressiosysteemat, known in English as compression systems, are mechanical or electronic devices designed to reduce the size of data or other forms of information. This reduction is achieved by removing redundancy or using more efficient encoding methods, allowing for faster transmission and reduced storage requirements. There are two primary types of compression: lossless and lossy.

Lossless compression algorithms, such as ZIP and PNG, allow the original data to be perfectly reconstructed from the compressed version. This is crucial for applications where data integrity is paramount, like text documents, executable files, and medical images. Examples of lossless techniques include run-length encoding and Huffman coding.

Lossy compression, on the other hand, achieves higher compression ratios by discarding some information that is deemed less important to human perception. This is commonly used for multimedia files like JPEG images, MP3 audio, and MP4 video. While some quality is lost, the reduction in file size is often significant, making these formats practical for streaming and general use. The effectiveness of lossy compression depends on the specific algorithm and the acceptable level of quality degradation.
