Komponeerimise

Komponeerimise is the act or practice of creating original music. In Estonian usage, it refers to the process of composing works across genres, including classical, jazz, film music, and contemporary art music. A composer shapes musical ideas into a structured work, using elements such as melody, harmony, rhythm, form, and timbre to convey expressive meaning.

The composition process typically starts with an idea or brief and proceeds through ideation, drafting, and revision. Common techniques include melodic development, harmonic planning, contrapuntal textures, rhythmic design, and orchestration. Composers decide on form—whether a sonata, theme-and-variation, through-composed, or minimalist approach—and notate or produce the music using traditional scores, digital notation, or computer-based systems.

Historically, komponeerimise spans Western classical traditions and extends into jazz, opera, film, and experimental music. Practices vary from strict formal design to open-ended timbral exploration, and many composers blend multiple methods.
