Kompatibilitätsmängeln refer to defects or issues that arise when different systems, components, software, or hardware are not able to work together as intended. This can lead to malfunctions, errors, or a complete failure of operation. In the context of consumer goods, particularly in sales law, Kompatibilitätsmängeln are a specific type of defect that can give rise to warranty claims.

A compatibility issue can manifest in various ways. For example, a new software program might not run on an older operating system, or a newly purchased accessory might not function with an existing device. In the realm of legal definitions, a Kompatibilitätsmangel exists when the purchased item is not suitable for the use that the buyer can expect based on the purchase agreement. This includes situations where the item is not suitable for the customary use or the specific intended use communicated to the seller.

When a Kompatibilitätsmangel is present, the buyer generally has legal remedies available, such as the right to demand rectification of the defect (Nachbesserung), replacement (Nachlieferung), or in certain circumstances, a price reduction or rescission of the contract (Rücktritt). The burden of proof typically lies with the buyer to demonstrate that the defect existed at the time of purchase or transfer of risk. Sellers are obligated to provide goods that are free from such compatibility issues, especially if they have made specific assurances about compatibility.
