Komitety

Komitety (sing. komitet) are formal or informal bodies established within organizations, institutions, or public authorities to perform defined tasks, coordinate activities, oversee programs, or advise decision-makers. They bring together individuals with relevant expertise, stake in the issue, or responsibility for implementation, and operate under a specified mandate, rules, and time frame. Typical features include a chair who leads meetings, a secretary or administrator, regular members, a defined scope of work, and a reporting line to a higher authority such as a council, board, or ministry.

Functions commonly include preparing proposals and policy options, monitoring progress, supervising budgets or compliance, coordinating cross-departmental work, and representing the organization in external relations. Decisions are usually taken by majority vote, consensus, or according to predefined procedures; meetings follow agendas and are documented in minutes. Many komitety establish subcommittees to handle specialized topics.

Komitety appear in various contexts, such as legislative or parliamentary committees (often termed committees or commissions in different systems), executive or steering committees within corporations or associations, and ad hoc committees created to address a particular issue. In public administration, they may be used to supervise implementation of programs, oversee funding, or balance interests among stakeholders.

The term komitet derives from the French comité and has been adopted into Polish and other languages. In Polish governance and civic life, komitety have long played roles from party organization to civil society groups, and are commonly used to describe both formal structures within institutions and temporary groups formed for specific tasks.
