Kollisionsdetektioner, or collision detection, is a fundamental process in computer graphics, robotics, physics simulations, and game development. It involves identifying when two or more objects occupy the same space at the same time. This determination is crucial for preventing objects from passing through each other, triggering physical reactions, or initiating game events.

The complexity of collision detection varies greatly depending on the shapes of the objects involved. Simple shapes like spheres or axis-aligned bounding boxes (AABB) allow for computationally inexpensive detection algorithms. For more complex, arbitrary shapes, techniques like bounding volume hierarchies (BVH) or swept volume tests are often employed to reduce the number of potential intersection checks.

Common collision detection algorithms can be broadly categorized into broad-phase and narrow-phase detection. Broad-phase algorithms quickly eliminate pairs of objects that are far apart, narrowing down the potential colliders. This might involve spatial partitioning techniques like grids or octrees. Narrow-phase algorithms then perform more precise intersection tests on the remaining candidate pairs to confirm if a collision has occurred.

The outcome of a successful collision detection can trigger various responses. In physics simulations, this might involve calculating impulse forces to realistically bounce objects apart.
