Kollineaarsus

Kollineaarsus is a concept in geometry that describes the relationship between points. Three or more points are considered collinear if they lie on the same straight line. The term itself comes from the Latin words "collinearis," meaning "lying in the same line."

Determining collinearity is a fundamental task in geometry and has various applications. In two-dimensional space, points $(x_1, y_1)$, $(x_2, y_2)$, and $(x_3, y_3)$ are collinear if the slope between the first two points is equal to the slope between the second two points. Mathematically, this can be expressed as $\frac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1} = \frac{y_3 - y_2}{x_3 - x_2}$, provided that the denominators are not zero. If the denominators are zero, it indicates vertical lines, and collinearity can be checked by comparing the x-coordinates.

Another method to check for collinearity in 2D involves the area of the triangle formed by the three points. If the points are collinear, the area of the triangle they form will be zero. The formula for the area of a triangle with vertices $(x_1, y_1)$, $(x_2, y_2)$, and $(x_3, y_3)$ is $\frac{1}{2} |x_1(y_2 - y_3) + x_2(y_3 - y_1) + x_3(y_1 - y_2)|$. If this expression equals zero, the points are collinear.

In three-dimensional space, collinearity can be determined using vectors. Three points P, Q, and R are collinear if the vector PQ is parallel to the vector PR. This means that one vector must be a scalar multiple of the other. For example, $\vec{PQ} = k \cdot \vec{PR}$ for some scalar $k$.

The concept of collinearity is crucial in various fields, including computer graphics for rendering lines and shapes, in surveying for mapping and construction, and in physics for analyzing motion along a straight path.
