Koligativních refers to a group of properties of solutions that depend solely on the number of solute particles dissolved in a solvent, rather than on the chemical nature of the solute itself. These properties include vapor pressure lowering, boiling point elevation, freezing point depression, and osmotic pressure.

Vapor pressure lowering occurs because solute particles occupy some of the surface area of the solvent, reducing the rate at which solvent molecules can escape into the gas phase. Boiling point elevation happens because the presence of solute particles interferes with the ability of solvent molecules to escape the liquid phase, requiring a higher temperature to achieve a vapor pressure equal to the external pressure. Freezing point depression is due to solute particles disrupting the formation of the regular crystal lattice structure of the solvent, making it harder for the solvent to freeze. Osmotic pressure is the pressure that needs to be applied to a solution to prevent the inward flow of its pure solvent across a semipermeable membrane.

These koligativních properties are directly proportional to the molality of the solution, which is defined as the moles of solute per kilogram of solvent. The proportionality constant for each property is known as the colligative property constant, specific to the solvent. For example, the freezing point depression is given by the equation ΔTf = Kf * m, where ΔTf is the change in freezing point, Kf is the cryoscopic constant of the solvent, and m is the molality of the solution. Understanding koligativních properties is crucial in various scientific and industrial applications, including determining molecular weights of unknown substances and understanding biological processes.
