Kolchak

Kolchak is a fictional character created by Jeff Rice and first appearing in the novel "The Night Stalker" in 1973. He gained widespread recognition through a trilogy of television films and the subsequent television series "Kolchak: The Night Stalker" which aired from 1974 to 1975. Kolchak, portrayed by Darren McGavin, is an independent investigative reporter who stumbles upon supernatural and paranormal occurrences. His investigations often involve creatures of myth and legend, such as vampires, werewolves, and zombies, which he encounters while pursuing his journalistic leads.

Despite uncovering irrefutable evidence of these creatures, Kolchak's reports are consistently suppressed by authorities, who fear mass panic. This recurring theme of disbelief and cover-up is central to the character's plight. Kolchak operates outside the traditional journalistic establishment, often working alone and facing ridicule from his peers and superiors. He is characterized by his persistent, albeit often clumsy, pursuit of the truth and his distinctive attire, including a seersucker suit and a rakishly tilted fedora. The series and films established a cult following and are credited with influencing later supernatural dramas and horror fiction.
