Kokonaista

Kokonaista is a Finnish-language grammatical form. It is the partitive singular form of the adjective kokonainen, meaning whole or entire. The form is used when the noun it modifies is in the partitive case or when the speaker wants to emphasize the totality of a quantity. For example, kokonaista rahaa means “the whole amount of money,” and kokonaista ihmisjoukkoa can be used to refer to “the entire group of people.” In practice, kokonaista signals that no part of the thing is being considered separately.

In Finnish, adjectives agree with the nouns they modify in number and case; kokonainen has several inflected forms, including kokonaista for the partitive singular. The etymology traces back to koko, “whole,” with the derivational suffixes that form adjectives from nouns.

Use of kokonaista is common in formal or written Finnish, especially in contexts dealing with sums, populations, or measurements, where the speaker wants to stress totality rather than partial quantities. It is not a standalone noun and cannot be used without a head noun, nor is it used to express qualitative degree.
