Koetantimia

Koetantimia is a neologism used in theoretical discourse to denote a proposed relation between two phenomena that cannot be fully separated within a given context. There is no universally accepted definition, and the term is used in different ways across disciplines.

In philosophy, cognitive science, and semiotics, koetantimia is sometimes invoked to describe aspects of analysis where two elements—such as a perception and its memory trace, or a sign and its interpretant—are treated as co-constitutive. The concept emphasizes inseparability and interdependence rather than independent existence.

Typical characteristics proposed for koetantimia include: inseparability of components in practical analysis; emergence of properties only when components are considered together; and context-sensitivity, where the boundary between components shifts with theory or method. Because of its heuristic nature, koetantimia is debated: some see it as a useful way to model interdependent systems, while others argue it risks vagueness or overgeneralization.

Examples are usually hypothetical, such as discourse in which interpretation depends on simultaneous evaluation of syntax and world knowledge, or a data system where signal and context cannot be cleanly disentangled. In practice, researchers often compare koetantimia with related ideas like inseparability, co-emergence, or holism to clarify its scope.
