Koeaikaväli

Koeaikaväli is a Finnish term that translates to "probationary period" or "trial period." It refers to a specific duration at the beginning of an employment contract during which either the employer or the employee can terminate the employment relationship more easily than after the probationary period has ended. This period allows both parties to assess their suitability for the role and the working environment without the same level of notice or justification required for termination under normal circumstances.

The length of a koeaikaväli is typically defined by Finnish law or collective bargaining agreements. For most employment relationships, the maximum duration of a probationary period is six months. However, in certain specific situations, such as for fixed-term employment contracts of less than a year, the probationary period can be shorter, often up to half the duration of the fixed-term contract. During this time, the notice period for termination is generally much shorter, often just 14 days.

The purpose of the koeaikaväli is to provide flexibility and reduce the risk associated with hiring new employees. It allows employers to evaluate a new hire's performance, skills, and fit within the company culture. For employees, it offers a chance to experience the job and the workplace to ensure it aligns with their expectations and career goals. If either party finds the arrangement unsatisfactory, they can choose to end the employment relationship during this initial phase. After the probationary period concludes, the standard terms and conditions of employment, including longer notice periods for termination, come into full effect.
