Kodukindlustus

Kodukindlustus, meaning home insurance, is a form of private dwelling insurance that provides financial protection for a person’s home and personal possessions against common risks. In Estonia it is commonly available to homeowners and tenants and can cover building, contents, or both.

Typical coverages include protection for the building against fire, storm, water damage, and vandalism; contents insurance for personal belongings; personal liability coverage for damages the policyholder may cause to others; and additional living expenses if the home becomes uninhabitable due to insured damage. Some policies offer combined building and contents cover, while others separate them into building or contents insurance.

Optional add-ons may include coverage for valuable items, electronics, jewelry, and art; protection against natural disasters such as floods or earthquakes; accidental damage; home emergency services; and legal defense. Some policies have sub-limits for high-value items and may require separate riders for certain categories.

Who can buy: homeowners, renters, and landlords are commonly eligible, though terms vary by insurer. Premiums are influenced by the value of the dwelling and its contents, location, security measures, deductible, and the chosen coverage levels.

How to choose: compare the scope of coverage, limits, deductibles, exclusions, and price; check the insurer’s financial strength and customer service; and consider bundling with other policies for potential savings.

Claims: in case of loss, the insured notifies the insurer, documents damage, and cooperates with adjusters. Settlements typically cover repairs, replacement, or compensation up to the policy limits, subject to exclusions and policy conditions.
