Knoweren

Knoweren is a fictional term used in speculative fiction and some role-playing settings to describe a class of beings or a cultural role associated with extensive knowledge access and dissemination. In different works knoweren may be depicted as sapient guardians of information, as scholarly castes within a society, or as data-born entities that inhabit archives or digital networks. The concept is used to explore questions of epistemic authority, access, and responsibility.

Etymology and usage: The coinage combines the stem know- with a suffix such as -eren or -en, chosen for its connotations of belonging or identity. There is no single canonical definition across all works, and the term has emerged independently in several unrelated fictional universes and fan-produced settings. As a result, its precise meaning and traits vary by author.

In narrative roles: In literature and games knoweren characters are often portrayed as researchers, archivists, or translators who can retrieve or interpret hidden knowledge. Some depictions cast them as neutral mediators who regulate access to sensitive information; others present them as enigmatic figures whose knowledge carries ethical obligations or dangers.
