Knitstoffe

Knitstoffe, also known as knitted fabrics or knits, are textiles produced by interlacing loops of yarn in a specific pattern. This process of interlocking loops creates a flexible and elastic fabric. Unlike woven fabrics, which are constructed by interlacing warp and weft threads at right angles, knits are formed by a single continuous thread or multiple threads forming a series of interconnected loops.

There are two primary categories of knit fabrics: weft knits and warp knits. Weft knitting involves a single yarn or multiple yarns being fed into the knitting needles from the side, creating courses (horizontal rows of loops). Common examples of weft knits include jersey, rib knit, and purl knit. Warp knitting, on the other hand, uses multiple yarns, each forming a loop lengthwise, with the loops being interconnected vertically. This results in a more stable and less stretchy fabric compared to weft knits. Examples include tricot and raschel knits.

The structure of knit fabrics allows them to stretch in multiple directions, providing comfort and ease of movement. This inherent elasticity makes them suitable for a wide range of applications, including apparel such as t-shirts, sweaters, socks, and activewear, as well as home furnishings and technical textiles. The versatility and comfort of knitstoffe have made them a staple in the textile industry.
