Tricot is a term with more than one meaning. In textiles, tricot refers to a warp-knit fabric commonly used for lingerie, linings, and sportswear, while in geography it is the name of a small commune in northern France.

Fabric description and characteristics. Tricot fabric is produced on warp-knitting machines, such as standard tricot or Raschel machines. Yarns are fed lengthwise and interlock to form a stable fabric, which typically presents a smooth face with a fine textured back. The face often has a slight sheen, and the back shows a vertical pattern of wales. Tricot fabrics are usually lightweight and can offer considerable stretch in the width direction. They are commonly made from nylon or polyester, or blends that include elastane for extra elasticity; cotton variants also exist for a softer hand. Brushed or fleece-backed versions provide additional warmth and a plush interior.

Uses and care. Due to their soft hand, drape, and quick-drying properties, tricot fabrics are widely used for underwear, bras, swimwear linings, and various athletic garments. They are valued for breathability and comfort, though the level of stretch and opacity depends on fiber content and weight. Care instructions vary with composition but generally include machine washing and avoiding high heat to preserve elasticity and shape.

Geography. Tricot is also a commune in the Oise department in northern France. It is one of several places in France bearing the name and is noted primarily as a municipal locality within its region.
