Klise

Klise, also known as cliché, refers to an overused phrase, idea, or element in art, literature, or everyday conversation that has lost its original impact or novelty due to excessive repetition. What was once considered fresh or insightful can become predictable and uninspired when employed too frequently. The term originates from the French word "cliché," which itself derived from the sound of a printing plate hitting the mold.

In literature and storytelling, cliches can manifest as plot devices, character archetypes, or common turns of phrase. For example, the "damsel in distress" or the "lone wolf hero" are character cliches. Similarly, phrases like "happily ever after" or "it was a dark and stormy night" are common linguistic cliches. While cliches can sometimes be used intentionally for effect, such as for comedic or nostalgic purposes, their overuse generally detracts from the originality and depth of a work. Identifying and avoiding cliches is often a goal for creators seeking to produce fresh and engaging content. The effectiveness of a cliche is subjective and can change over time as cultural contexts evolve.
