Klippstjórar

Klippstjórar, also known as "klipparar" or "klippastjórar", are individuals in Iceland who are responsible for managing and overseeing the operation of sheep enclosures, particularly during the annual sheep round-up (réttir). Their role is crucial in ensuring the safe and efficient gathering and sorting of sheep from the remote summer pastures.

The primary duty of a klippstjóri involves coordinating the efforts of farmers and volunteers during the réttir. This includes directing the movement of sheep into the corrals, ensuring that each farmer's flock is identified and separated correctly, and overseeing the health and welfare of the animals throughout the process. They are often experienced individuals with a deep understanding of sheep husbandry and the local landscape.

Historically, the position of klippstjóri was informal, with leadership naturally falling to those with the most knowledge and authority. In modern times, while still often an informal leadership role, their importance remains. They act as organizers and problem-solvers, adapting to the challenges that arise during the round-up, such as difficult terrain or unpredictable weather. The success of the réttir, a significant cultural and economic event in rural Iceland, heavily relies on the diligence and expertise of the klippstjórar.
