Klesmerker

Klesmerker refers to the system of marks and labels attached to clothing to convey information about a product. They are used by manufacturers, retailers, and regulators to identify brand, size, materials, care requirements, country of origin, and other data. Klesmerker can be integrated into the garment as woven labels, printed labels, or heat-transfers, and may also appear as hangtags that accompany the product at point of sale. In modern supply chains, digital identifiers such as barcodes or RFID tags supplement traditional labels for inventory control and traceability.

Common content includes brand name or logo, size, care instructions and symbols, fiber content and percentages, country of origin, manufacturer or importer, and lot or batch numbers. Some labels also provide information about sustainability attributes, such as recycled content or compliance certifications.

Formats and materials vary: woven labels stitched into seams, satin or twill ribbons; printed fabric labels; heat-transfer labels; plastic or paper hangtags. Care symbols follow international standards; the symbols indicate washing temperature, bleaching, drying, ironing, and dry cleaning. In many jurisdictions, labeling requirements mandate disclosure of fiber content, care instructions, and country of origin for textiles sold to consumers.

Trends include increased use of QR codes or NFC chips linking to product information, and moves toward more durable, eco-friendly label materials. Critics note that excessive labeling can contribute to textile waste, while supporters argue that labels promote informed purchasing and recall safety.
