Kivilaattojen

Stone tiles, or natural stone tiles, are tiles cut from solid stone for floors, walls, and outdoor surfaces. They include granite, marble, limestone, travertine, slate, quartzite, and sandstone. In Finnish, kivilaatat means stone tiles, and kivilaattojen is the genitive form used in phrases like kivilaattojen valinta.

They are produced in polished, honed, brushed, tumbled, or textured finishes and in a range of sizes from small mosaics to large slabs, commonly 30x30 cm, 60x60 cm, or 90x90 cm.

Durability, porosity, and slip resistance vary by stone. Granite is very hard; marble and limestone can stain or etch more easily. Porous stones typically require sealing; dense stones may resist staining with less sealing.

Installation requires a suitable substrate, moisture management for wet areas, and appropriate adhesives and grout. Outdoor use in freezing climates requires frost-resistant stones and proper expansion joints to accommodate movement.

Care involves regular cleaning with pH-neutral cleaners, prompt blotting of spills, and periodic resealing for porous stones. Acidic cleaners should be avoided on calcareous rocks.

Stone tiles offer a durable, timeless aesthetic and are used indoors for floors and walls, and outdoors for patios, stairs, and pool surrounds. Availability, cost and maintenance needs vary by material.
