Kivennäiskuidut

Kivennäiskuidut refers to mineral fibers, which are inorganic materials composed of long, thin strands. These fibers are naturally occurring in some geological formations, such as asbestos minerals like chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite. They can also be manufactured, with examples including fiberglass, mineral wool (rock wool and slag wool), and ceramic fibers.

The physical properties of mineral fibers, such as their high tensile strength, flexibility, and resistance to heat and chemicals, have led to their widespread use in various applications. Historically, asbestos was extensively used in building materials for insulation and fireproofing due to its excellent insulating properties and resistance to fire. Manufactured mineral fibers are still commonly used for thermal and acoustic insulation in buildings, industrial equipment, and appliances. They are also found in automotive components, filtration systems, and even some consumer products.

However, concerns have arisen regarding the potential health effects associated with exposure to certain types of mineral fibers. Inhaling fine mineral fibers, particularly asbestos fibers, can lead to serious respiratory diseases, including asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma. The risk depends on the type of fiber, its size and shape, the duration and intensity of exposure, and individual susceptibility. Due to these health risks, regulations and guidelines are in place in many countries to limit exposure to mineral fibers in workplaces and to manage the removal and disposal of materials containing hazardous fibers. Research continues to explore safer alternatives and better methods for handling and mitigating risks associated with mineral fibers.
