Kitarans

The Kitarans are a fictional ethnic group described as inhabitants of the Seven Isles archipelago in the eastern seas. They are traditionally a maritime people, known for skilled navigation, boatbuilding, and a diverse craft sector that includes weaving, carving, and copperwork. Their societies have historically been organized around coastal city-states that traded with inland kingdoms and neighboring island cultures.

Historically, the Kitarans developed from coastal and island populations that formed extended kinship networks. In the medieval period they united under a loose confederation called the Sea Confederacy, which coordinated inter-island affairs while allowing local communities to govern themselves. Contact with mainland powers and distant traders facilitated cultural exchange, technology transfer, and the growth of urban centers. In modern times, the Kitarans maintain a cultural presence across the archipelago and in diaspora ports, while participating in a regional federation that preserves autonomy for cultural practices and language.

Language and society form a central part of Kitarian identity. The Kitaran language belongs to the Kitaric family and includes several dialects. Literacy commonly uses a locally adapted syllabary, though oral storytelling remains a strong tradition. Social organization centers on kinship clans led by elder councils, with leadership roles distributed across genders depending on factors such as experience and communal consensus. Economic life combines fishing, staple agriculture, and trade, with craft industries producing goods for both local use and inter-island commerce.
