Kilpirauhasesiintymät refer to the presence of abnormal growths or masses within the thyroid gland. These can manifest as nodules, which are distinct lumps, or as more diffuse changes in the gland's tissue. While many kilpirauhasesiintymät are benign, meaning they are not cancerous, they can sometimes be indicative of thyroid cancer. The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland located at the base of the neck, responsible for producing hormones that regulate metabolism.

The occurrence of kilpirauhasesiintymät is quite common, particularly in older individuals and women. Several factors can contribute to their development, including iodine deficiency, autoimmune thyroid diseases like Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and radiation exposure. In many cases, these growths are asymptomatic and are discovered incidentally during medical examinations for other conditions or imaging studies.
