Kierteyttäminen

Kierteyttäminen is a Finnish term that refers to the process of creating screw threads. This can be done either externally, on a rod or bolt, or internally, within a hole or nut. The process involves removing material in a helical pattern to form the threads. Kierteyttäminen is a fundamental machining operation used in countless manufacturing applications, from simple household items to complex machinery.

There are several methods for kierteyttäminen. External threads are commonly made using a die, which is a tool with hardened cutting edges that cuts the thread as it is rotated over the workpiece. Alternatively, a lathe can be used with a threading tool to cut precise threads. Internal threads are typically created using a tap, a tool with cutting edges that forms the thread as it is screwed into a pre-drilled hole. Thread milling is another method for producing internal threads, especially in harder materials or when precise thread profiles are required.

The design of threads, including their pitch (the distance between adjacent threads) and profile (the shape of the thread), is crucial for their function. Different thread standards exist globally, such as the Metric thread and the Unified Thread Standard (UTS), to ensure interchangeability of fasteners.
