Kierteitys

Kierteitys is a Finnish term that broadly refers to the process of threading or creating threads on a cylindrical or conical surface. This can be done on both internal and external surfaces. In mechanical engineering, kierteitys is a fundamental manufacturing process used to create fasteners such as screws and nuts, as well as to assemble components that require threaded connections.

The term can encompass various methods of thread creation. External kierteitys, or the threading of a rod or bolt, can be achieved through turning on a lathe using a threading tool or by rolling threads using dies. Internal kierteitys, the creation of threads within a hole, is typically performed using a tap, which is a cutting tool that cuts internal helical grooves.
