Kierrätysprosessit refers to the various methods and procedures involved in collecting, sorting, and processing waste materials for reuse. These processes are crucial for environmental sustainability, aiming to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and conserve natural resources.

The typical recycling process begins with waste collection. This can be done through curbside pickup programs, drop-off centers, or specialized collection services for businesses. Once collected, the waste is transported to a materials recovery facility (MRF).

At the MRF, the waste undergoes a sorting process. This can be manual, where workers physically separate different materials, or automated, utilizing technologies like magnetic separators for ferrous metals, eddy current separators for non-ferrous metals, optical sorters for plastics and paper, and screens for size separation. The goal is to create clean streams of individual materials, such as paper, cardboard, various types of plastic, glass, aluminum, and steel.

After sorting, the separated materials are baled or compacted for efficient transportation to recycling mills or manufacturers. These facilities then transform the recycled materials into new products. For example, recycled paper can be made into new paper products, recycled plastic into fibers or new containers, and recycled metals into new metal goods.

Different materials require specific processing techniques. Paper is pulped and cleaned, plastics are often melted and reformed, and glass is crushed and melted.
