Kierrätysyhteiskunta, or circular economy, is an economic model that aims to minimize waste and make the most efficient use of resources. It contrasts with the traditional linear "take‑make‑dispose" system by designing products and services that are regenerative and resource-efficient. The core principles include reducing consumption, reusing and repairing goods, remanufacturing products, and recycling materials.

In a circular system, business models shift from selling physical products to selling usage rights or services. This encourages manufacturers to design for longevity and easy disassembly. Policies such as extended producer responsibility, green public procurement, and waste legislation support the transition by creating incentives for waste reduction and resource recovery.

Benefits of a kierrätysyhteiskunta include decreased reliance on fossil fuels, lower greenhouse gas emissions, reduced landfill use, and new economic opportunities in repair, refurbishment, and recycling sectors. It also fosters resilience against supply chain disruptions by localizing resource flows.

Challenges remain. They include the need for technological innovation to handle complex material streams, consumer behavior change, and the upfront costs of redesigning products and facilities. Scaling circular practices globally requires coordinated action among governments, businesses, and civil society.

Examples of circular initiatives are seen in the European Union’s Circular Economy Action Plan and in countries such as Sweden, Finland, and Japan, where policies and industry practices actively promote a closed-loop system.
