Kieletieteen, also known as linguistics, is the scientific study of language. It encompasses a wide range of areas, including the structure of language, the history of languages, how languages are acquired, and how they are used in society. Linguists analyze the sounds of speech (phonetics and phonology), the formation of words (morphology), the arrangement of words in sentences (syntax), the meaning of words and sentences (semantics), and how language is used in context (pragmatics).

Comparative linguistics, for instance, examines similarities and differences between languages to reconstruct historical relationships and understand language change. Psycholinguistics explores the psychological and neurological factors underlying language use, while sociolinguistics studies the relationship between language and society, including variations in language based on social factors like class, region, and ethnicity. Language acquisition, a significant subfield, investigates how humans learn their native language as children and how they acquire additional languages later in life.
