Kieferklemme, also known as trismus, is a condition characterized by limited jaw movement. It can manifest as difficulty opening the mouth, chewing, or speaking. The condition arises from spasms or stiffness in the muscles responsible for jaw movement, primarily the temporalis and masseter muscles.

Several factors can cause Kieferklemme. Dental issues, such as impacted wisdom teeth or infections like abscesses, are common culprits. Trauma to the jaw or face, including fractures or dislocations, can also lead to this condition. Furthermore, surgical procedures in the head and neck region, particularly those involving the jaw or mouth, may result in temporary or prolonged trismus. Certain medical conditions, like tetanus, lockjaw, or even some autoimmune disorders, can also present with Kieferklemme as a symptom.

Treatment for Kieferklemme depends on the underlying cause. For dental problems, addressing the infection or removing the offending tooth is crucial. If trauma is the cause, medical intervention to manage the injury is necessary. In cases related to surgery, physical therapy and exercises to regain jaw mobility are often recommended. For more severe or persistent cases, medications to relax the muscles or manage underlying medical conditions may be prescribed. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are important to prevent complications such as malnutrition or speech difficulties.
