Keskusatomit, often translated as central atoms, is a term used in chemistry to describe the atom around which other atoms or groups of atoms are bonded. This central atom is typically the most electronegative or the least electronegative atom in a molecule, depending on the context. In many simple inorganic molecules, the central atom is the one that forms the most bonds. For instance, in water (H2O), oxygen is the central atom bonded to two hydrogen atoms. In carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), carbon is the central atom bonded to four chlorine atoms.

The concept of a central atom is crucial for understanding molecular geometry and bonding theories. VSEPR theory (Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion) is a model that predicts the geometry of molecules based on the repulsion between electron pairs around a central atom. The arrangement of these electron pairs, both bonding and non-bonding (lone pairs), dictates the shape of the molecule. Similarly, hybridization theory explains the bonding around central atoms by considering the mixing of atomic orbitals to form hybrid orbitals, which are then used to form sigma and pi bonds.

The identity and electronic configuration of the central atom significantly influence the molecule's properties, including its polarity, reactivity, and physical characteristics. In more complex organic molecules, the concept of a central atom might be less distinct, but often a particular carbon atom can be considered central to a functional group or a specific part of the molecule's structure. Identifying the central atom is a fundamental step in drawing Lewis structures and predicting molecular behavior.
