The term originates from the Old East Baltic language and is believed to have been used to describe various tribes or communities inhabiting the area during the pre-medieval and early medieval periods.

The exact identity and boundaries of the Keskallikaad remain debated among historians, as their existence is primarily documented through archaeological findings and brief mentions in medieval chronicles. The region they inhabited was characterized by dense forests, fertile river valleys, and a maritime environment, which influenced their subsistence practices.
