Kertaushäntä

Kertaushäntä is a Finnish term that translates to "edge tooth" in English. It is a specific type of tooth shape or malocclusion, also known as a knife edge or misaligned bite. In individuals with a kertaushäntä, the upper and lower teeth do not align properly, resulting in a distinctive edge-like appearance of the front teeth.

This condition can be caused by various factors, such as narrow or crowded teeth, inadequate jaw growth, or an overbite. As a result, the edges of the front teeth may become worn or chipped, and the surrounding gum tissue may become inflamed. In extreme cases, kertaushäntä can lead to TMJ disorders, tooth sensitivity, and other oral health issues.

Symptoms of kertaushäntä may include difficulty eating or speaking due to the misaligned teeth, accentuated points on the front teeth, and accelerated wear on the molars and fillings of the surrounding teeth. In addition to aesthetic concerns, untreated kertaushäntä can lead to more severe oral health problems over time.

Kertaushäntä is a relatively common condition that can be treated with orthodontic appliances, such as braces or clear aligners, and crowning or veneering of the affected teeth. In some cases, dental bonding or contouring may be sufficient to correct the appearance and function of the teeth. With proper treatment and care, individuals with kertaushäntä can achieve a healthier, more aesthetically pleasing smile.
