Kerrospäällystein

Kerrospäällystein refers to a type of pavement construction where multiple layers of different materials are placed on top of each other to create a durable and stable road surface. This layered approach is common in modern civil engineering for highways, airports, and other high-traffic areas.

The foundational layer, often called the subgrade, is the prepared natural soil or bedrock. Above this, a subbase layer is typically added, which can consist of crushed stone, gravel, or other granular materials. This layer provides structural support and helps with drainage. The next layer is the base course, which is usually made of a more compacted and precisely graded aggregate than the subbase. This layer is crucial for distributing the load from the surface to the layers below.

The uppermost layer is the surface course, which is the part of the pavement that vehicles directly interact with. This can be asphalt concrete (bituminous pavement) or Portland cement concrete (rigid pavement). The specific materials and thicknesses of each layer are determined by factors such as expected traffic volume, climate, and the type of soil present.

The primary advantage of kerrospäällystein construction is its ability to distribute loads effectively, preventing excessive stress on any single layer and increasing the overall lifespan of the pavement. The different materials are chosen for their specific properties, such as strength, drainage, and resistance to weathering, to create a composite structure that performs better than a single-material pavement.
