Kerroshinnat refers to a traditional Finnish folk belief and practice centered around the protection of homes and livestock from malevolent spirits or supernatural threats. The term combines "kerro" (meaning "floor" or "level") and "shinnat," which is derived from the Finnish word "sinnit" (meaning "threads" or "fate"), though its exact etymology is debated. The concept is rooted in rural Finnish culture and reflects a blend of animism, shamanistic practices, and practical superstitions.

The practice typically involved weaving or knotting specific patterns into textiles, such as cloth or rope, to ward off evil influences. These protective charms were often placed under the floorboards (hence "kerro") of homes or tied to livestock to ensure safety and prosperity. Some accounts suggest that certain knots or symbols were believed to trap harmful spirits or misfortune, while others aimed to attract positive energy.
