Examples include the Cockcroft-Walton generator and the Van de Graaff generator. While capable of achieving high voltages, they are generally limited in their energy output by the breakdown strength of the insulating materials used.

Another major type is the cyclic accelerator. In these machines, particles are accelerated repeatedly through a series of electric fields. The most common examples are cyclotrons and synchrotrons. Cyclotrons use a constant magnetic field to bend particles in a spiral path while radiofrequency electric fields provide the acceleration. Synchrotrons, on the other hand, use both magnetic fields and electric fields that increase in strength or frequency to keep particles on a fixed circular or nearly circular path, allowing for much higher energies.

Linear accelerators, or linacs, form a third distinct category. Linacs accelerate particles in a straight line through a series of accelerating cavities or drift tubes. These structures are timed to provide successive "kicks" of energy to the particles as they pass through. Linacs are particularly effective for accelerating electrons and are used in both research and medical applications.
