Kerf width refers to the width of the material removed by a cutting tool. This is a critical parameter in many cutting processes, including sawing, milling, and laser cutting. The kerf is the gap or channel created by the cutting action as the tool passes through the material.

Understanding kerf width is essential for accurate material processing. If the kerf width is not accounted for, the resulting pieces will not be the intended size. For example, in woodworking, if a saw blade has a kerf of 3mm, and a piece of wood is cut in half, each resulting half will be 3mm shorter than if the cut had removed no material. This means that when calculating cuts for a project, the kerf must be subtracted from or added to measurements as appropriate to achieve the desired final dimensions.

The kerf width is influenced by several factors related to the cutting tool and the material being cut. For saw blades, the thickness of the blade, the set of the teeth (the outward bend of the teeth), and the material's density all contribute. For milling operations, the diameter and flute count of the end mill are important. In laser cutting, the beam diameter and the material's properties affect the kerf.
