Kereszthidak

Kereszthidak is a term used in civil and structural engineering to denote transverse structural members, typically cross-beams or cross-girders, placed perpendicular to the main longitudinal elements of a structural system. The name derives from the Hungarian words kereszto, meaning cross, and híd, meaning bridge, and is used to describe cross members in bridges, viaducts, or building floors.

In bridges and viaducts, kereszthidak span between adjacent main girders or between the deck and supporting elements, forming a grid that distributes loads from the deck to the primary supports. They contribute to lateral stability, help control torsion, and facilitate uniform load sharing. They may also function as shear connectors or as forms for deck construction. Materials commonly used include steel, reinforced concrete, and timber, and they can be designed as rigid or semi-rigid elements depending on the structural system.

In buildings, kereszthidak appear as cross-beams in floor systems, arranged to create a rigid frame that supports the floor slab and transfers loads to columns or walls. Their spacing and dimensions depend on load requirements, span length, and chosen materials.

Key design considerations include connection detailing, protection against corrosion for steel members, and compatibility with thermal expansion of adjacent components. Engineers balance factors such as stiffness, weight, constructability, and cost when specifying kereszthidak within a structure.
