Keratinocytes undergo a process called keratinization, where they lose their nucleus and other organelles, becoming filled with keratin. This process helps to protect the skin from mechanical damage and dehydration. Keratinocytes also produce various cytokines and growth factors that regulate immune responses and wound healing.

Dysfunction or damage to keratinocytes can lead to skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and acne. These conditions can result from genetic factors, environmental factors, or a combination of both. Understanding the role of keratinocytes in skin health is essential for developing effective treatments for these conditions.
